chiropody and podiatry

Banstead Village Chiropody/Podiatry

What is Podiatry/Chiropody?

Podiatry is everything that traditional Chiropody is, but reflects some of the more advanced treatments, such as Biomechanics (understanding how the joints and muscles work together when we walk) and minor surgery for ingrown toenails.

The term chiropody has been traditionally used in the UK for many years, whereas podiatry is recognised internationally. Our team of Podiatrists are all HCPC registered and members of the Society of Podiatrists and Chiropodists. What to expect during your first appointmentInitial appointment includes a full foot assessment, taking of medical history, and full treatment.Follow up Standard appointments are 30 minutes.

Sometimes we do need a longer time to treat you. We will advise on this when we assess you. We must stress this is very unusual.Equally, some patients only require a 15 minute appointment, for a re-dressings, one foot, or perhaps a single troublesome corn or toenail problem. We also do simple nail cutting. This is not available until after an initial appointment to assess you. Please don’t book a 15 minute appointment unless you have been advised to do so.It is more usual that a 15 minute appointment is sufficient for follow -up verrucae treatments, but this will be the decision of the Podiatrist who will advise a 30 minute appointment if required.

What do Chiropodists/Podiatrists treat?

Nail cutting

We offer a simple nail cutting service for those patients who are unable to cut their own nails.

Calluses and corns

These are removed painlessly and the cause identified if possible. Relevant advice will then help to prevent reoccurrence of these conditions.

Heel /foot pain

Dry, cracked heels can be treated and preventative advice given.Foot and heel pain can be improved with varying combinations of paddings, support taping, cushioned heel cups and cushioned insoles. The Podiatrist may also advise stretching and strengthening exercises or rest, in some cases special supporting insoles (orthoses) may be advised.

Minor surgery for ingrown nails

This painful condition can be easily corrected by skilful removal of the affected edge and with appropriate antiseptics and dressings. More severe or reoccurring ingrown nails can be treated with a simple minor operation. This provides a permanent solution to the problem under local anaesthesia.

Nail disorders

Many problems occur with toenails such as thickening, lifting and fungal infections. These and more can all be dealt with at the surgery.

Sports injuries

Sports injuries can be treated by a combination of stretching and strengthening exercises, physical therapies and orthoses.

These viral infections often resolve of their own accord. However if they are persistent or very painful, they can be treated with either acid treatments or Cryotherapy,( freezing with liquid nitrogen), or occasionally a combination of both.

Diabetic assessment

Includes vascular (Doppler) and neurological assessment.
Inclusive of GP report and treatment.

Orthoses and insoles

Supportive or corrective orthoses or insoles are available. Orthoses are special insoles, sometimes custom made to correct your individual foot and leg alignment thus restoring optimal function and preventing further injury.

Deep foot massage

This very relaxing treatment boosts circulation to the foot and helps to mobilize the joints.

Domiciliary (Home)

Visits are available to the housebound.
